The Ives Main Library is a branch of the New Haven Free Public Library (NHFPL) system. Designed by renowned architect Cass Gilbert in 1911, the library is a cornerstone of the historic New Haven Green and serves as the main branch of the NHFPL. The branch is home to public services departments for children, teenagers, and adults, as well as a computer technology center, and “Ives Squared,” a newly renovated space designed to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship.
CHALLENGE
NHFPL recognized the need for building automation upgrades at the Ives Main Library, and turned to Fidelity Energy & Sustainability for our proven ability to collaborate with utility companies and maximize energy savings. Upgrades to the library’s ventilation, lighting, and water control systems were identified with the goal of installing a new user interface that incorporated existing automation hardware wherever possible. The work was to be completed while the building remained occupied and required coordination with the grand opening of Ives Squared.
SOLUTION
Fidelity Energy & Sustainability’s work at the 120,000 square foot library included the installation of three custom-built rooftop units, effectively upgrading the existing structure’s heating and cooling systems. Direct digital controls were installed throughout the facility.
RESULTS
Providing a complete turn-key solution, Fidelity Energy & Sustainability maximized the library’s energy efficiency with a post-installation estimate of 30-40% in cost savings. These upgrades significantly reduced NHFPL’s expenditures and centralized the library’s automated control systems for the scheduling of lights and the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning units.
