Lapham-Hickey Steel is a full line steel service center specializing in value-added metal processing. Headquartered in Chicago with multiple offices throughout the country, they occupy a 61,000 square foot facility in Pawcatuck, Connecticut.
CHALLENGE
Fidelity Energy & Sustainability was tasked with strategizing and implementing a comprehensive energy efficiency project that would address the needs of the building’s aging mechanical systems while simultaneously improving plant efficiency and optimizing employee comfort.
SOLUTION
Over 200 LED lighting fixtures with integrated occupancy and dimming controls were installed throughout the facility. A high-efficiency rotary screw air compressor with a Variable Speed Drive (VSD), Variable Frequency Drive (VFD), and premium Totally Enclosed, Fan-Cooled (TEFC) motor was installed, as well as two high efficiency rooftop HVAC units equipped with VFDs, dual enthalpy economizer optimization, demand CO, and programmable thermostats.
RESULTS
Fidelity Energy & Sustainability delivered a turn-key project that secured an incentive from a local energy provider of nearly $86,000, representing 61% of the total project cost. Financed with a no interest energy loan requiring no capital outlay, Lapham-Hickey Steel was able to generate a net positive cash flow over a three year term that can now be used for operating capital. The upgrades will save Lapham-Hickey Steel $19,000 each year on gas and electric expenses and an estimated $256,000 over the projected lifespan of the equipment, offering improved plant performance and increased light quality and comfort for the employees.
